Hepatitis 'A' outbreak linked to frozen berries sold at Costco

Organic Frozen Berries From Costco Cause Hepatitis A Outbreak

May 31, 2013 the Associated Press reported that more than thirty people in several western states have been infected with Hepatits A in an outbreak that has been linked to an organic frozen berry mix sold at Costco.

Frozen Berries Sold at CostcoFrozen berries sold as "Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend" from Towsend Farms in Oregon have been linked to the outbreak. According to the Associated Press, the company said that it traced the contamination to pomegranate seeds from Turkey that are used in the mix. Costco has removed the product from their shelves and said it is working to notify customers who bought the product to throw it out.

In response to the outbreak, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), warned consumers not to eat Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend of frozen berries sold through Costco. Click here to read this warning.

Health experts say Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that shows up about 15 to 50 days after exposure. If you think you might have been exposed to the berries, you can receive a shot or vaccination to prevent or reduce the chance of getting the illness. Symptoms include yellow eyes or skin, abdominal pain, diarrhea, pale stools, and dark urine. Anyone displaying these symptoms should contact their health-care provider immediately. Symptoms can start up to seven weeks from the time of exposure.
